FOCUS: Firefighter Occupational Cancer Understanding and Support
“Empowering Firefighters, Saving Lives.”

FOCUS: Firefighter Cancer Prevention & Education
At FOCUS, our mission is to provide an understanding of the increased incidence of occupational cancer among the fire service through education and training. We are committed to offering Best Practices for firefighter occupational cancer prevention, ensuring the health and well-being of those who protect our communities.
Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month
This January, we’re recognizing Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month. Firefighters face a 9% increase in cancer diagnoses, and a 14% increase in cancer-related deaths compared to the general population in the U.S. This month is dedicated to educating firefighters and the public about the best practices to prevent, and reduce exposure to, carcinogens.

Our Services

Training for the Fire Service
We provide comprehensive training programs specifically designed for firefighters. Our courses cover essential topics such as cancer prevention, awareness, and mitigation strategies. By equipping firefighters with the knowledge and skills they need, we aim to reduce the incidence of occupational cancer within the fire service.

Advocacy and Education
We engage with key stakeholders, including those who control funding, to educate them on the importance of supporting firefighter occupational cancer prevention efforts. By raising awareness and advocating for change, we aim to secure the necessary resources and support for firefighters.

Cancer Classes – Cancer 101
Our Cancer 101 classes offer a comprehensive overview of occupational cancer, its causes, and preventive measures. Through these classes, we empower firefighters with the information they need to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Outreach and Support
We actively engage with fire academies and provide educational sessions to aspiring firefighters. Through these interactions, we ensure that future generations of firefighters are equipped with the knowledge and awareness to protect themselves from occupational cancer.

Best Practices for Fire Cancer Prevention
We work closely with fire departments and agencies to implement and promote the 12 best practices for fire cancer prevention. Our team provides guidance and support in implementing these practices, ensuring that firefighters have access to the most effective preventive measures available.

Online Resources
Our website serves as a hub of reliable and up-to-date information on firefighter occupational cancer. We provide access to reputable peer journals, articles, and resources that have been thoroughly researched and vetted. This ensures that firefighters have easy access to accurate and reliable information.

Support for Firefighters
We offer support and resources for firefighters who have been diagnosed with cancer or are seeking to implement preventive procedures within their departments. We provide guidance, connections to support networks, and access to resources that can assist firefighters on their journey towards recovery and prevention.

FOCUS: Safeguarding Firefighters’ Health
In addition, as a token of our appreciation for their participation in our training programs, we provide decontamination wipes and sunscreen to firefighters during their training sessions.
At FOCUS, we are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of firefighters by providing the knowledge, support, and resources they need to prevent occupational cancer. Join us in our mission to protect those who protect us. Together, we can create a safer and healthier future for our firefighters.
