About Us

Our Story
FOCUS was born out of a shared passion for making a difference in the lives of firefighters facing the increased risk of occupational cancer.
We discovered a significant gap in knowledge and understanding between healthcare providers and firefighters when it comes to firefighter cancer risk, prevention and screening. It became clear that there was a pressing need to bridge this gap and provide firefighters with better access to cancer screening and preventive care. This includes free education on topics related to firefighter cancer for firefighters and healthcare providers alike.
At FOCUS, our vision is to ensure that firefighters receive the care, support, and resources they need to prevent occupational cancer. We believe that by working collaboratively with healthcare providers and primary care professionals, we can make a profound impact on the health and well-being of firefighters in our communities.
United for Firefighter Cancer Prevention
With a combined 57 years experience in cancer care and the fire service, our team feels obligated to address the gap in knowledge and action related to firefighter occupational cancer. Our team of cancer care providers and fire service experts are working together to shed light on the disproportionate rate of cancer in the fire service and the many variables that affect this complicated problem.
FOCUS is driven by a deep commitment to serve the local firefighting community. We have been volunteering our time and expertise, with the help of our local cancer center and fellow firefighters, since early 2023. To date, we have successfully educated over 600 firefighters in our area, with ongoing requests for classes.
